Since I wrote the first "newsletter" it has become apparent that the Susquehanna may be too low to support canoeing this year. I have not confirmed that with the outfitter yet, but Kelly seems to think it's too low. As such, I have been looking into the following rivers as alternatives. If anyone can provide some help with the research let me know. Essentially, I'm trying to minimize the drive such that we can drive out on Friday night and return Sunday night. I'm also trying to find a river with water and camping along the way.

  1. Delaware River - in New York and PA. I have read on the www that the Delaware is in relatively good shape in terms of water level. Unfortunately, that info was published by an outfitter. Anyway, the Delaware looks like it will have some scenery. Camping may be tough though.
  2. Lehigh River - A little bit more driving. Supposedly has class II rapids and enough water to canoe. Also has plenty of islands for camping.
  3. Pittsburgh Rivers - Ohio, Monongehela, Youghogheny (Don't quote me on the spellings).
